Verstappen took the pole by 0.054 while giving away the middle sector, and won the race without ever leaving a 0.755 window. He led all 62 laps and was quicker on the medium than on the soft. The only unsettled question all afternoon belonged to the car that started third and finished sixth.
Verstappen took pole on a 1:31.373, with Leclerc second on a 1:31.427. The margin was 0.054 and he built all of it in sector one and sector three, the 2 he owned outright in Q3. Sector two he gave to Hamilton. The top 4 covered 0.189, the closest front of the season, and the driver on the front of it had already won Saturday's sprint from sprint pole.
The grid did not match the session. Russell qualified sixth and took a 40-place drop for power unit components, which put him nineteenth and moved Piastri, Gasly, Lawson, Lindblad and Hülkenberg each up one place. Hadjar qualified eleventh and started twenty-second after a power unit change of his own. The front 6 read Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton, Antonelli, Norris, Piastri. Antonelli came to Sunday leading the championship by 89 points over Russell, with 6 rounds to follow Singapore and 150 points left in them. No driver could settle the title that afternoon, which had been true all season.
Marina Bay measures 4.927 metres short of 5 kilometres and runs 62 laps, the longest race distance on the calendar by time. It has 19 corners and walls on both sides of most of them, which gives the circuit a documented character of heavy braking, high lateral tyre load and very little room to pass. Pirelli brought C3, C4 and C5, the softest trio available. The race ran dry, air temperature between 30.0 and 30.7 degrees and track temperature between 41.7 and 44.6.
On median green laps across the afternoon, Red Bull were quickest of the 11 teams in all 3 sectors and on the lap. Nobody else owned a single sector. Ferrari were 0.121 off on the lap, McLaren 0.459, Mercedes 0.493. That is a narrow sheet at the front, and it is the whole explanation for why the afternoon's interest sat behind the leader rather than on him.
5 of the front 6 started on the soft. Hamilton started on the medium, the only front-runner who did. Verstappen led into Turn 1 and was never headed, for the whole race, including the lap he spent in the pit lane.
The opening laps had the race in them. Verstappen led Leclerc by 0.605 at the end of lap 1 and 1.257 at the end of lap 6. Across laps 2 to 7 their mean green lap times read 1:38.112 and 1:38.176, a difference of 0.064 a lap. Behind them Hamilton on the medium ran 1:38.395, Antonelli on the soft 1:38.487 and Norris on the soft 1:38.515. The field had already sorted itself into two groups, and the compound was not what sorted it.
2 cars were quick at Marina Bay and 4 were not. The tyre on the car had nothing to do with which group it was in.
Bortoleto pulled off on lap 7 with a gearbox failure and the virtual safety car covered laps 8 and 9. His car caught fire in the pit lane later. It changed nothing at the front, except that it brought Leclerc back to within 0.743 at the end of lap 9. That was the last time the race was close.
From lap 12 the interval between the leading pair never came back inside 2 seconds. It read 1.544 on lap 12, 2.881 on lap 15 and 4.496 on lap 18. Across the whole race the two cars spent 11 laps within 2 seconds of each other, in two windows, laps 1 to 7 and laps 9 to 12. For the remaining 50 laps the leader was alone.
The first stint is also where the afternoon's most repeated claim falls down. Ferrari said afterwards, and the wire reports carried, that Hamilton had struggled for pace on his mediums. The lap times do not support it. Across laps 10 to 15 the means read Verstappen 1:37.348, Leclerc 1:37.704, Norris 1:37.892, Antonelli 1:37.921, Hamilton 1:37.955. Hamilton was 0.034 a lap behind Antonelli and 0.063 behind Norris, both on the softer tyre, and he held third on the road ahead of both of them for every lap of the stint.
The degradation sheet is harder still on the claim. Over 15 measured laps Hamilton's medium improved at 112 milliseconds a lap with no cliff, the steepest improvement of any front-runner. Antonelli's soft improved at 99, Leclerc's at 55, Verstappen's at 46, Norris's at 7. The medium was the tyre getting better fastest. What the data does record is 2 slow laps at the end of it, a 1:38.462 on lap 16 and a 1:39.173 on lap 17. Antonelli's lap 17 was a 1:39.124 and Norris's a 1:38.931. Three cars slowed together on the same lap. One of them was called in.
The medium was improving when Ferrari took it off. The stop was a decision about the car in front, not the tyre underneath.
Hamilton came in on lap 18 and took a scrubbed set of softs, 3 laps old. He rejoined sixth. The soft worked immediately. Laps 21 to 23 read 1:37.247, 1:37.170 and 1:37.075, and his best of the afternoon came on lap 28, a 1:36.922. The pace was there.
The position was not. Antonelli stopped on lap 23 and Leclerc on lap 24, and Leclerc rejoined ahead. At the last clean snapshot before his stop, the end of lap 15, Hamilton had been 4.441 behind Leclerc. An undercut taken 6 laps early against a car that far up the road bought him nothing except a tyre with 6 more laps on it than the one he was now following. He was told to back off and manage degradation. From lap 24 to lap 32 he sat fifth, behind a Ferrari on fresher rubber, going nowhere.
Verstappen stayed out until lap 32, the latest stop of anyone at the front, and that stint is the piece of the race worth keeping. From lap 10 to lap 30 he ran 21 green laps on one set of softs. Every one of them came in between a 1:37.197 and a 1:37.952. The window is 0.755 wide, on a street circuit with 19 corners, in 44-degree track temperature, on the softest compound trio Pirelli make. His degradation across the stint was negative. The tyre was quicker at the end of it than in the middle.
He came in on lap 32 for mediums and rejoined still leading. Norris stopped the same lap, Piastri on lap 33 with a slow stop. Colapinto had stopped with a driveline failure on lap 29 and the yellow sector ran to lap 31. At the end of lap 33, with every front-runner's first stop done, Verstappen led Leclerc by 4.675 and Hamilton was third.
Verstappen one-stopped by stopping late. Hamilton one-stopped by stopping early and then having nowhere to put the second one.
Stroll stopped at Turn 15 on lap 36 and the virtual safety car covered laps 37 to 40. A neutralised circuit makes a pit stop cost a fraction of its usual time, and Marina Bay had already produced 2 of them. This was the one that decided third place and everything under it.
Ferrari called both cars. Leclerc came in on lap 39 and took softs. Antonelli came in on lap 39 and took softs. Russell came in on lap 39 for the only stop of his afternoon. Hamilton did not come in. In his own words: "The team called me in but I missed the pit entry. After that, I decided to stay out." Vasseur's account was shorter. "It was a mistake."
At that moment Hamilton's softs read 24 laps of life. When the circuit went green on lap 41 he was second on the road and every car behind him had tyres between 4 and 5 laps old. Leclerc's first flying lap on them was a 1:35.202, the fastest lap of the race. Hamilton's was a 1:37.504.
He held it for 5 laps, which is the part of his afternoon the data is kindest about. Laps 41 to 45 read 1:37.504, 1:37.957, 1:37.381, 1:37.541 and 1:37.561, a window of 0.576 on a tyre nearing 30 laps. Leclerc across the same 5 laps averaged 1:35.674. Holding second cost nothing in lap time and bought no time at all.
Both cars are on the soft compound for this entire window. The only difference between the two lines is 20 laps of tyre life. Hamilton's lap 54 and lap 55 are the two slowest green laps either car set.
The decision was 4 laps wide and it was taken at the pit entry, not on the wall.
Leclerc took second back on lap 46. Hamilton's lap was a 1:38.895 and Leclerc's a 1:37.131, and the pass is visible in the trace before it is visible on the circuit.
What followed is a tyre running out of itself in public. Lap 53 read 1:39.092, lap 54 a 1:40.977, lap 55 a 1:41.645. Antonelli went past on lap 54 and Norris on lap 55. Hamilton's lap 61 was a 1:42.068. Piastri took fifth off him on lap 61. Across the 39 measured laps of that second stint his soft degraded at 67 milliseconds a lap, and it finished the race at 47 laps of life. He crossed the line sixth, 53.188 behind, having been second on the road with 22 laps to run.
The leader spent those same laps doing something that deserves its own paragraph. Verstappen's medium stint was quicker than his soft stint. His best soft lap was a 1:37.197. His best medium lap was a 1:36.201, nearly a second better on the harder compound. Laps 44 to 48 read 1:36.201, 1:36.255, 1:36.236, 1:36.219 and 1:36.284. That is 5 consecutive laps inside 0.083 of each other, set between lap 44 and lap 48 on a tyre already 12 laps into its life.
Pit laps, out-laps and all non-green laps are removed. The shaded box is the 0.755 window, every green soft lap from 10 to 30. The step down at lap 34 is the compound change, and the whole medium stint runs below the soft one. The single spike at lap 50 is a traffic lap.
His radio failed partway through that stint and the team went to the pit board. It made no measurable difference to anything. The lap times either side of the failure are indistinguishable.
One car got quicker when it went to the harder tyre. One got slower on the softer one for 44 laps. They finished 53 seconds apart.
Verstappen. Sprint pole, sprint win, Grand Prix pole, Grand Prix win, and every one of the 62 laps led. His 73rd victory and his first at Marina Bay, on his 250th start. Red Bull were quickest of all 11 teams in all 3 sectors on the median green lap. He finished second on the race-pace sheet at a 1:37.285 median against Leclerc's 1:37.138, which is a ranking artefact rather than a verdict. Leclerc ran his last 23 laps on a set that was 4 laps old when he took it, and Verstappen ran 30 on one set. He is fourth in the championship on 221.
Leclerc. Second, 7.335 behind, the fastest lap of the race and the fastest race-pace median on the grid. He was 0.054 from the pole and never nearer than 0.605 to the win. The virtual safety car stop on lap 39 is the whole of the difference between his afternoon and his team mate's, and he took it. Ferrari were the second-quickest car in all 3 sectors and scored 26 points, 18 of them his.
Hamilton. Third on the grid, second on the road on lap 40, sixth at the flag. The medium start was defensible and the data clears it. The lap-18 stop was 6 laps early against the car he needed to beat. The missed pit entry on lap 39 was his own, and he said so twice, once on the radio and once afterwards. "Sorry boys, I let you down with that strategy." Vasseur's reckoning was that the race was worth second and third to Ferrari. The gap between what the team got and what Vasseur thinks it should have had is 4 places on one car. He is third in the championship on 229.
Antonelli. Fourth on the grid, third at the flag, 24.573 behind, and 15 points to go with the 5 from Saturday. He shadowed Hamilton for the whole first stint and finished it 0.034 a lap behind him. He stopped on lap 23, a lap before Leclerc, and took the virtual safety car stop on lap 39 that Hamilton did not. He took third on lap 54 and held it. A black and white flag for track limits at Turn 2 and a report of fluid leaking near his feet from brake heat soak cost him nothing. He is the championship leader on 340, 102 clear.
Russell. Qualified sixth, started nineteenth after a 40-place power unit drop, finished ninth for 2 points on a single stop taken under the lap-39 neutralisation. Ninth on the race-pace sheet, 1.457 a lap off Leclerc. He went into Sunday 89 behind and leaves 102 behind. The weekend took him from 84 behind to 102, which is the largest single-weekend loss of his title campaign, and 40 places of it were decided before he turned a wheel on Sunday.
McLaren. Fourth and fifth, 22 points, and third-quickest on the median lap at 1:37.924. Norris ran the same strategy as Verstappen, one stop on lap 32, and finished 40.506 behind. Piastri took a slow first stop on lap 33 and a second on lap 41, and passed Hamilton for fifth with 2 laps to run. Neither had the pace of the leader and neither had the strategic misfortune of the car they beat.
3 cars retired. Bortoleto stopped on lap 7 with a gearbox failure and his car caught fire in the pit lane afterwards. Colapinto stopped on lap 29 with a driveline failure. Stroll stopped at Turn 15 on lap 36, which produced the neutralisation that decided the podium. Albon retired on lap 59 and was classified eighteenth. Hamilton was investigated for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, and the stewards took it no further.
The constructors' table reads Mercedes 578, Ferrari 444, McLaren 339, Red Bull 332. In the drivers' championship Antonelli has 340 to Russell's 238, with 6 races left and 150 points in them. That arithmetic has crossed a line it has not crossed before this season. A 102-point lead with 150 available cannot be settled today, but one more round takes the available total down to 125. Austin is the first race of 2026 at which the championship can be won.
The condition is narrow. Antonelli needs to leave Texas more than 125 clear, which means outscoring Russell by 24 in a single afternoon. Exactly 1 combination does it. Antonelli wins the United States Grand Prix and Russell finishes tenth or lower. Anything else, including an Antonelli win with Russell ninth, carries the title to Mexico City on 1 November.
Max Verstappen. Qualifying. Singapore Grand Prix. A time set with a whole run of Q3 still to come has to do something harder than be fast. It has to stay fast while everyone else tries again.
Series III · The Data RemembersVerstappen beat Leclerc to pole in Singapore by 0.054. Leclerc was quicker at the apex of 8 of 12 braked corners and took sector two. The short straights, and Turn 16, gave sector three and the pole to Verstappen.
