Antonelli lost the lead to the pit cycle for 7 laps and took it back on the road. Leclerc, Verstappen and Hamilton stopped twice trying to beat a one-stop from pole, and none of them did. The championship did not end in Austin. It now needs an eighth place in Mexico City.
Antonelli took pole on a 1:34.035, 0.179 clear of Verstappen. The middle sector carried 0.178 of it. Verstappen won sector one by 0.056, Antonelli won sector three by 0.057, and the two cancelled to the thousandth. It was his 7th pole of 2026 and his first since Spa.
Saturday left Sunday a specific question. Antonelli's advantage had been largest from the Turn 11 hairpin onto the back straight, the straight where Overtake Mode is worth most to a car within 1 second of the one ahead. Could Verstappen stay inside that second long enough to use it? He never got there. In every lap of the race the timing recorded with the Red Bull behind the Mercedes, the gap never fell below 2.215. The corner at the end of that straight still decided the race. It did it with a different cast.
The front 8 started as they qualified. Antonelli, Verstappen, Hadjar, Leclerc, Hamilton, Russell, Piastri, Norris. Further back, Bortoleto took an 80-place drop for a second full power unit and started twenty-first, Colapinto took 10 places and started twentieth, and Lindblad took 5 and started fourteenth. Stroll started from the pit lane. Antonelli arrived 102 points clear of Russell, with 5 races and 125 points left after Austin. A win could settle it, but only with Russell tenth or lower and Hamilton fifth or lower.
Circuit of The Americas runs 5.513 kilometres over 56 laps and 20 corners. The Esses carry some of the most sustained high-speed load on the calendar, Turn 1 and the Turn 11 hairpin are the heavy stops, and the stadium section from Turn 12 to Turn 15 asks for low-speed grip. Pirelli brought C2, C3 and C4 and predicted one stop, soft or medium onto hard. The race ran dry, air at 27 degrees and track at 37 on the formation lap.
Antonelli started on the medium. The 4 cars behind him started on the soft, Hamilton on a used set. Russell, Piastri and Norris started on the medium too. Ferrari brought a 4-part package of floor, diffuser and sidepod changes, and McLaren a 3-part package of brake ducts, diffuser and rear suspension. Mercedes brought nothing new. The afternoon would test whether a medium-start one-stop from pole could hold off two teams willing to stop twice.
Antonelli was clean into Turn 1. Behind him, Leclerc took second from Verstappen on the climb and lost it back at Turn 15. By the end of lap 2 the order read Antonelli, Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton, Hadjar, and it held until the first stops.
The race was neutralised once early, for 14 seconds on lap 2, while marshals cleared a piece of bargeboard from the Albon and Alonso contact at Turn 11. Russell left the track at Turn 12 on the first lap while fighting Piastri and kept the place. The stewards gave him 5 seconds for it.
Then the first stint settled into one number. Verstappen ran between 2.215 and 2.812 behind for 12 laps and could not break it. Across laps 4 to 12 the means read Antonelli 1:40.961, Verstappen 1:41.005, Leclerc 1:41.092, Hamilton 1:41.356, Hadjar 1:41.518. The leader was on the harder compound and still the quickest of the front 5, by 0.044 a lap over the Red Bull on softs.
The medium matched the soft for pace. Everything after that was the medium lasting longer.
Red Bull moved first. Verstappen came in at the end of lap 13 and took another set of softs, which committed him to stopping again. Hamilton followed a lap later onto mediums. Leclerc and Piastri came in at the end of lap 15, and Norris at the end of lap 16 with a 4.4-second stop. Antonelli stayed out.
The soft did what it was fitted to do. Verstappen was 21.669 behind the leader at the end of lap 14 and 11.752 behind at the end of lap 24. Across laps 15 to 24 he averaged 1:40.288 to Antonelli's 1:41.260, close to a second a lap. Antonelli's mediums ran every lap from 13 to 23 between 1:41.043 and 1:41.697. They were slowing, not falling away.
One car stood in the Red Bull's way for part of it. Hadjar stayed out on his first softs and held second from lap 16, and Red Bull swapped their drivers on lap 23. Verstappen had wanted it done earlier. Russell came in at the end of lap 22, served his 5 seconds in the stop and rejoined tenth.
Antonelli came in at the end of lap 24 for hards. His 24-lap first stint was the longest of the 4 cars that would finish at the front, and only Hadjar, at 25, went further on a first set. He rejoined fourth, 8.130 behind. On the road, the two-stop had worked. Verstappen was leading the United States Grand Prix.
Red Bull bought the lead with a second set of softs. The price was a second stop.
The lead lasted 7 laps, and the lap times explain why. From lap 26 to lap 30 Antonelli averaged 1:39.976 on new hards. Leclerc, on mediums fitted on lap 16, averaged 1:40.571. Verstappen, on softs fitted on lap 14, averaged 1:41.031, more than a second a lap slower than Antonelli.
Pit laps are left out, so the lines break at Antonelli's out-lap on lap 25 and at Verstappen's stop on laps 31 and 32. Antonelli is on hards throughout, Leclerc on mediums. Verstappen is on softs until lap 31 and mediums from lap 33. The vertical rule marks lap 32, when Antonelli passed Leclerc at Turn 12 for the lead.
The gap fell on every lap. Antonelli was 8.130 behind Verstappen at the end of lap 25, then 7.017, 5.880, 4.800, 3.316, 2.853, and 1.373 at the end of lap 31. On lap 30 Verstappen radioed about a possible car issue. By then the lap times had already turned against him. To come out of his last stop still ahead of Antonelli he needed a lead worth a pit stop. He came in at the end of lap 31 with 1.373 and rejoined fifth, 18.937 behind. Against the leader the stop had cost him 20.310.
Below zero means ahead of Antonelli on the road. Verstappen and Leclerc dip under the line only from lap 25 to lap 31, while Antonelli's stop was done and theirs were not. The jumps on laps 14 to 16 and lap 32 are their pit stops, and the drop on lap 25 is Antonelli's. The shaded band is the 7 laps Verstappen led.
That left Leclerc in front, briefly. He had been closing on Verstappen too and was 0.578 behind him at the end of lap 31, with Antonelli 0.795 further back. On lap 32 Antonelli passed him at Turn 12 for the lead. Leclerc fought it, though he still had a stop to make. At the line the Mercedes was 0.629 ahead. It read 1.153, 1.737 and 2.066 over the next 3 laps. That was the smallest lead Antonelli held all afternoon in the laps the timing recorded, and he had answered it inside 3 laps.
Verstappen spent those laps on fresh mediums and was the quickest car of the front group. Laps 33 to 35 read 1:39.534 against Antonelli's 1:39.953, Hamilton's 1:40.400 and Leclerc's 1:40.432. That is 0.419 a lap on the leader, from 18.937 behind. It took the gap to 17.682 at the end of lap 35.
Verstappen led on a tyre that was finishing. Antonelli chased on one that was starting. It took 7 laps to settle which mattered more.
The middle of the race was Ferrari's to decide. Leclerc was 2.066 behind Antonelli at the end of lap 35, and both Ferraris were still on the mediums they had fitted around lap 15. Up front, Antonelli ran wide lapping a Williams around lap 36 and was not pleased about it. Colapinto was called in to retire a lap later.
Around lap 40 Ferrari answered the question. Hamilton came in for hards, and Leclerc followed a lap later. Leclerc rejoined fourth, behind Norris and Verstappen, and went to work at once. His 1:37.976 on lap 42 was the fastest lap of the race, and he was lapping close to 2 seconds quicker than the Red Bull in front of him. Behind him Hamilton passed Hadjar for fifth.
Norris was the surprise of the stretch. McLaren left him out on the hards he had fitted on lap 17, and the Ferrari stops lifted him to second on the road. By lap 46 Verstappen was 0.7 seconds behind him, with Leclerc about a second further back. It lasted one more lap. On lap 47 Verstappen went down the inside of Norris into Turn 1, and Leclerc took the McLaren at Turn 12 before the lap was out.
The second stop gave Ferrari the freshest tyres in the race. It also put 2 cars between them and anything better than second.
Leclerc took second from Verstappen at Turn 12 on lap 49. He was 0.576 behind at the end of lap 48, 0.947 ahead at the end of lap 49 and 1.782 clear a lap later. His hards had gone on around lap 40. Verstappen's mediums had been on since lap 32.
Hamilton was quicker still, and he had 2 cars to get through. At the end of lap 48 he was fifth, 4.036 behind Norris and 7.464 behind Verstappen. The gap to Norris read 2.341, then 0.393, and Hamilton went past on lap 51. Norris did not fight it. The gap to Verstappen had come down to 5.898 and then 5.496.
Then Bottas stopped next to a service road with an engine issue, and the virtual safety car ran for 3 minutes and 52 seconds across laps 51 to 53. Antonelli had already passed the pit entry and stayed out.
Hamilton's closing rate was the same number on both sides of it. Across laps 48 to 50 he averaged 1:38.787 to Verstappen's 1:39.835. Across laps 54 to 56 he averaged 1:38.565 to Verstappen's 1:39.613. Both differences are 1.048 a lap. The neutralisation took the gap from 5.496 to 4.175, a closing of 1.321 over 3 laps that would have been worth 3.144 at racing pace. After it the gap read 3.573, 2.504 and 1.030 at the flag.
The shaded band is the virtual safety car, laps 51 to 53. Laps 51 and 52 are left out because the gap at the line was measured mid-neutralisation. The dashed line continues Hamilton's 1.048-a-lap closing rate from lap 50 for comparison. It is arithmetic, not a lap anyone drove.
Give him back the 1.823 the VSC held off and the arithmetic puts Hamilton on Verstappen's gearbox at the end of lap 55, with a lap to run. It cannot say whether he would have got past. The VSC came at the wrong moment for Hamilton, and Verstappen saw it the same way. He said afterwards he was "maybe a bit lucky with the VSC at the end."
Antonelli spent the last stint managing a tyre. His hards were 32 laps old at the flag. Across laps 48 to 56, leaving out the 3 VSC laps, he averaged 1:39.580. Leclerc averaged 1:38.778 and Hamilton 1:38.676 on hards about 15 laps younger. The lead over Leclerc came down from 16.959 at the end of lap 48 to 15.323 starting the last lap, and Antonelli gave away 2.245 of it on lap 56 alone, a 1:40.566 against Leclerc's 1:38.321. He won by 13.078.
The VSC did not decide the podium. It took away the 2 laps that would have made the question real.
Antonelli. Pole, 49 of the 56 laps led, one stop, and a win by 13.078, his 9th Grand Prix win of 2026. The only laps he did not lead were the 7 when his stop was done and the two-stoppers' were not, and he took the lead back on the road at Turn 12. Every front-runner who tried to beat him with a second stop finished behind him. He leads the championship on 365, 123 clear.
Leclerc. Fourth on the grid, second at the flag, his second straight second place, with the fastest lap of the race. The two-stop gave him the quickest car on track at the end and still left him 13.078 short. On 233 he is fifth in the championship and can no longer win it. The most he can reach is 358.
Verstappen. Second on the grid, third at the flag, 17.485 behind. The two-stop got him the lead on lap 25 and gave it back on lap 31. A second set of softs bought 7 laps in front and a 20.310 stop he could not cover. On 236 he can no longer win the title. The most he can now reach is 361.
Hamilton. Fifth on the grid, fourth at the flag, 1.030 from the podium, and 12 points. On 241 he is third in the championship, 124 behind with 125 left. He is still alive by 1 point, and to use it he needs to win all 5 remaining races with Antonelli scoring nothing.
Russell. Sixth on the grid, eighth at the flag. The 5-second penalty for leaving the track at Turn 12 against Piastri on the first lap was served at his stop on lap 22. He finished 1.629 behind Piastri, so it probably cost him seventh, an estimate because it was served in the pit stop. He had 4 lap times deleted at Turn 12, on laps 49, 50, 54 and 55, and a black-and-white flag shown after the chequered flag. Nothing further came of it. He was sixth of the front 8 on pace in the first stint (1:41.668) and seventh in the last 6 green laps (1:40.984). There was no recovery in it. He is second on 242, alive by 2 points.
McLaren and Hadjar. Norris started eighth and finished fifth on a 40-lap hard stint, and held second on the road for a spell after the Ferrari stops. Piastri started and finished seventh, and was the car Russell spent the second half behind. On the first set of tyres the McLarens were the 2 slowest of the front 8, Norris 1:41.679 and Piastri 1:42.160 across laps 4 to 12, in the race their 3-part package arrived for. Hadjar started third and finished sixth on a 25-lap soft stint, fifth-quickest of the front 8 in both the first and last windows and behind both Ferraris and Verstappen in each.
That matters for the comparison the race invites. Ferrari against Red Bull on pace was Ferrari against Verstappen, and the sheet changes with tyre age. On the first set Verstappen was quicker than both Ferraris. On fresh mediums after lap 31 he was quicker again. In the last laps the Ferraris, on hards around 9 laps younger than his mediums, were close to a second a lap quicker. Ferrari's two-stop put them on the freshest tyres at the end. It is not evidence of a faster car.
Each bar is a driver's mean green lap over the same laps as the other 4, shown as the gap to the quickest of the 5 in that window. Laps 48 to 56 leave out the VSC laps 51 to 53. Hover for the lap time and compound. Who leads changes with the tyres. Antonelli leads on the first set, Verstappen on new mediums, and the Ferraris on new hards at the end.
3 cars retired. Bearman stopped after 24 laps with damage from early contact, carrying a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Gasly. Colapinto retired after 35 laps, and no cause has been published. Bottas stopped after 48 laps, which brought out the late VSC. The stewards took no further action against Bortoleto for leaving the track at Turn 11, and there are no open cases after the flag.
The drivers' table reads Antonelli 365, Russell 242, Hamilton 241, Verstappen 236, Leclerc 233, Norris 211. The title did not end in Texas because neither of the other two conditions held. Russell needed to finish tenth or lower and finished eighth. Hamilton needed fifth or lower and finished fourth. The lead is 123 with 125 available, and only Russell and Hamilton can still reach 365. Behind Antonelli, second place in the championship is now 4 drivers inside 9 points.
The condition in Mexico City is simpler than the one in Austin. If Antonelli finishes eighth or higher, he is champion whatever anyone else does. A Russell win with Antonelli eighth still leaves the lead at 102 with 100 points to come. The constructors' table reads Mercedes 607, Ferrari 474, and Red Bull and McLaren level on 355.
Kimi Antonelli. Qualifying. United States Grand Prix. A championship is never won on a Saturday. A lap can only put it where Sunday can finish it.
Series III · The Data RemembersAntonelli beat Verstappen to pole in Austin by 0.179. Sector 2 carried 0.178 of it. The other two sectors cancelled to a thousandth, and every edge the Mercedes held in the middle came from Turn 9 onward.
