The Tow They Paid For, and the Trace Can’t Find

Mercedes sent Kimi Antonelli out ahead of George Russell on both Q3 runs and took no lap from him in return. The road shows no return on it. Russell and Pierre Gasly topped out within one kilometre an hour of each other on the main straight. Russell then carried full throttle later, reached the first chicane fifteen km/h faster, and left it thirty-six slower, which accounts for the entire sixty thousandths between a maiden pole and second place.

A Customer Car, on Pole, at the Power Circuit

Pierre Gasly took pole at Monza with a 1:21.786. George Russell answered with a 1:21.846. Sixty thousandths across 5,793 metres, at a circuit where qualifying order is normally just the engine order, written down.

Both cars run a Mercedes power unit. One of them is built by Mercedes. Gasly’s is not.

The sector ledger says the rest. Russell was quicker through Sector 2 by 0.110 and quicker through Sector 3 by 0.019. Gasly took Sector 1 by 0.189, which is more than three times the margin that settled the session. He won the sector that opens with the fastest stretch of road on the circuit, and he won it without ever being the faster car along it.

Stack the afternoon’s three best Q3 sectors and the composite is 1:21.494. Gasly finished 0.292 outside a lap nobody drove, and 0.060 ahead of every lap anybody did.

It was his first pole in nine seasons of trying, the first for a French driver since Jean Alesi took one here in 1997, and the first for Alpine since the team stopped being Renault. He also won his first Grand Prix at this circuit, six years ago.

A customer took pole at the power circuit, in the sector built for power, from a works car that had a tow arranged for it. Everything about that sentence is the wrong way round.

Two Cars Geared the Same

Sort the full-throttle samples by gear and the usual explanation disappears.

Ratio audit — engine speed per km/h at sustained full throttle. 8th gear: Gasly 34.4, Russell 34.4. 7th: 38.7 to 38.8. 6th: 44.5 to 44.7. 5th: 50.4 to 50.5.

Four gears, four ties. At every ratio either car spends real time in, the two gearboxes are within half a per cent of each other. Monza does that. It asks the question so bluntly that every team arrives at the same answer. Whatever separated these two laps, it was not a decision taken in a gearbox.

The point distribution is stranger still. Across 299 usable measurement points, Russell was the faster car at 203 and Gasly at 93. More than two-thirds of the road belonged to the man who starts second.

It is not even close inside Gasly’s own sector. Russell led at 61 of Sector 1’s 101 points and still lost it by nearly two tenths. In Sector 2 the count was 61 to 21, in Sector 3 it was 81 to 33, and those two sectors together bought him 0.129 seconds.

Both cars held full throttle for almost exactly the same proportion of the lap. 76.8 per cent for Gasly, 77.1 for Russell. The brake counts are as close: twelve applications to fourteen through Sector 1, six to five through Sector 2, six to nine through Sector 3. Two drivers, the same engine, the same ratios, the same pedal for the same fraction of the same road.

Neither did anything on this lap the other did not. No error in either trace, no lock-up, nothing the eye would catch from the pit wall.

Which leaves a very small piece of road to explain a pole position, and a question about what the timing beam measures. A sector time is not a survey of who led it more often. It weights every metre by how long the car took to cover it, so the slowest metres count most.

At Monza that distinction is violent. A car ten metres adrift at 340 km/h has lost a tenth of a second. The same ten metres at 80 km/h costs it nearly half of one. Russell’s deficit was taken where metres are most expensive, and handed back where they are cheapest.

Russell was the faster car at two-thirds of Monza and the faster car nowhere that mattered. The lap does not average. It accumulates.

Rettifilo Collects

The Rettifilo is the first chicane, 765 metres from the line, at the end of the fastest stretch of road on the circuit. Both cars go to the brake there within a metre and a half of each other. What they bring to it is not the same.

The obvious explanation is a slipstream, and Mercedes had built one deliberately. Antonelli went out ahead of Russell on both Q3 runs and set no flying lap on either. His grid slot was already forfeit to a power-unit penalty, so the laps cost the team nothing. The trace declines to credit it. Both cars top out on that straight within a single kilometre an hour of each other, 343 to 342. Neither was in clean air to begin with: the final Q3 runs crossed the line in the order Norris, Verstappen, Russell, Lindblad, Leclerc, Hamilton, Gasly, Colapinto, which puts six cars in front of the Alpine and two in front of the Mercedes. At Monza in Q3 nobody is alone. Both of these laps were run inside the same train. What the fifteen actually records is a throttle pedal. Gasly’s last full-throttle reading is 333 km/h at 724 metres. Russell’s is 336 at 737. One began preparing for the corner and the other did not.

The trouble with fifteen kilometres an hour is that it has to go somewhere.

Gasly is out of eighth gear by 827 metres, down to fifth at 173 km/h, third by 840, first by 868. Russell is still in eighth gear at 859 metres doing 139 km/h, thirty-two metres and thirty-four km/h deeper into the corner than Gasly, in top gear, with the chicane already underway. He drops eighth to third at 874 and third to first at 884. The gearbox is not managing a corner. It is catching up with a car that arrived too fast.

Then he has to touch the brake a second time, at 926 metres, still doing 82.

Gasly’s minimum is 71 km/h at 924 metres. Russell’s is 69 km/h at 945, twenty-one metres further down the road and two km/h slower when it comes. Gasly is at full throttle by 981. Russell gets there at 998, seventeen metres later.

Thirty-one down at a kilometre. Twenty-one down at 1,050. Twelve at 1,100. Nine at 1,200. Four at 1,320.

Russell gives the whole of the Curva Grande to it. Five hundred metres at full throttle in top gear, doing nothing but recovering ground a chicane took off him. He is not level again until 1,480 metres, and the two cars cross the Sector 1 line within a kilometre an hour of each other.

By then the sector has decided. Nothing that happens in the last four hundred metres of it can undo a thirty-six km/h deficit taken at walking-pace speeds, because the further down the straight the gap is measured, the less time it is worth.

He arrived at the corner fifteen kilometres an hour richer and left it thirty-six poorer. He did not borrow that fifteen from a slipstream. He kept it, from the throttle, for about forty metres too long.

The Sector Where the Loan Was Repaid

If Sector 1 were the whole argument, Russell would not have been within sixty thousandths of it. He was, because the other two-thirds of Monza is exactly the circuit Mercedes built the W17 for.

The back straight runs from the exit of Ascari to the braking zone for Parabolica, a kilometre of full throttle with nothing to do but accelerate. Russell is quicker along all of it.

Both cars are at full throttle with the brakes released for the whole of it, and the gap only grows. At 4,480 metres it is 305 km/h to 316. At 4,720 metres, 314 to 324. At 4,960, 319 to 326. Russell peaks at 327 km/h along there and Gasly at 319, eight kilometres an hour of clear water. It is also where both cars are slowest: Gasly tops the main straight 23 km/h higher than he manages here, Russell 16. Whatever the train was doing for them, it was doing more of it at the start of the lap than at the end.

Bin those samples by speed rather than by distance and the shape holds where it matters. Between 290 and 310 km/h, Russell gained 16.3 km/h per hundred metres of road to Gasly’s 11.5. Above 310, 3.8 to 2.0. The two cars are level in the middle of the range and separate at the top of it, which is the part of a Monza lap that lasts longest.

What that measures is an outcome. Both cars are on the same power unit and, as the gears already showed, the same ratios. What remains is how much wing each team elected to carry and what the chassis does with the air it has left, and the road records only that one of them arrived at the end of a kilometre in front. It cannot say which of those two things put it there.

The main straight tells the opposite story, and it is worth holding both. There, with the tow, Russell’s peak was 343 km/h to Gasly’s 342. One kilometre an hour. The slipstream did not make the Mercedes faster than the Alpine in a straight line. It made it faster at the moment it needed to stop.

And the sector all that straight-line speed sits in is the one Russell barely won. Sector 3 went to him by nineteen thousandths while he led at 81 of its 114 measurement points, which is the same shape as the whole lap in miniature and for the same reason. It ends in Parabolica.

Parabolica. Gasly brakes at 5,084m from 293 km/h and holds the pedal for 62 metres. Russell brakes at 5,050m from 295 and holds it for 72.

Gasly goes thirty-four metres deeper on the same entry speed, brakes for ten metres less, and carries eight km/h more through the slowest point of Sector 3. From there the two traces run within two km/h of each other all the way to the line. A kilometre of back straight bought Russell the sector. One corner at the end of it gave almost all of it back.

Two straights, two answers. Where both cars were being pulled along, Russell gained a single kilometre an hour. Where the pulling stopped, he gained eight.

What the Grid Is Actually Worth

Minus 0.189, plus 0.110, plus 0.019. Pole by 0.060.

Gasly starts a Grand Prix from the front for the first time, at the circuit where he won his first one. What that is worth on Sunday is a harder question here than almost anywhere, because Monza is the one place on the calendar that hands the following car a weapon and the leading car nothing.

The chicane that decided Saturday is also the best overtaking place in Formula 1, and it works on exactly the principle that just cost Russell a pole. A car a second behind down that straight arrives with more speed than it can use. In qualifying that surplus has to be shed, and shedding it destroys the exit. In a race it is put into the car ahead instead. That is the whole difference between a slipstream being a cost and a slipstream being a pass, and it is decided by whether there is anybody there to use it on.

Mercedes has already shown what it is willing to give up. Antonelli surrendered two qualifying laps to tow Russell, because a power-unit penalty had made his own grid slot worthless anyway. That arithmetic does not repeat across 53 laps. On Sunday a tow is not engineered by a team. It is produced by whoever happens to be in front, it is available to everyone at once, and nobody has to sacrifice a car to get one.

The Alpine’s case rests on something narrower and more fragile. It won a chicane exit by getting slowed down properly, once, from a car six places back in the train, and it won Parabolica the same way. Both of those are braking corners, and braking is the one thing at Monza a car behind cannot borrow.

Whether that survives contact with a race is a different question from whether it survived a Saturday. A qualifying lap asks a car to stop well once at each chicane on cold brakes. Fifty-three laps ask it to do so with a works Mercedes in the mirrors and a tyre that has already been through Ascari forty times.

One of the two things on the front row is repeatable. The lap does not say which.

At Monza the slipstream is a cost on Saturday and a weapon on Sunday. The same physics, pointed the other way.
