Mercedes carried the same electrical weakness and repaired it at home, on a weekend of their choosing. McLaren qualified third, started thirteenth, and called that the cheapest version available.
McLaren arrived at Albert Park as reigning constructors' champions, into a regulation reset that rewrote the power unit and the aerodynamics in the same winter. The half of that reset carrying the most performance was the half they do not build. A title defence is normally an argument about how much of an advantage a team can hold on to. This one opened as an argument about how much of a car a team actually owns.
Because a customer team spends its winter drawing a line down the middle of its own machine. On one side sits everything it controls. On the other sits what arrives on a truck from somebody else's factory, already finished, already homologated, already as good or as bad as it is going to be. In an ordinary year that line is an accounting detail. In a year built around energy recovery and deployment it becomes the shape of the season, because the rulebook has just moved the advantage to the far side of it.
McLaren drew their line further out than anyone else running a Mercedes engine.
Aerodynamic maximalism plus mechanical independence. Treat the customer engine shortfall as a fixed cost, cover it with floor and bodywork, and hold on to the transmission. Of the three teams buying Mercedes power in 2026, McLaren alone draw their own gearbox and build it, casing and internals alike. Williams and Alpine accept the supplier's with the rest of the package.
Every component a customer declines to purchase is a component it has decided it can draw better than the manufacturer can. That is a champion's confidence, and it should be read as one. The bet assumes the shortfall in the bought half is knowable, bounded and payable. It assumes the drawn half can be developed hard enough to cover it. And it assumes the gearbox is worth keeping, because a gearbox in 2026 is not merely a set of ratios. It sits in the energy path, which is the path the reset had just made decisive.
There is a further clause in the bet that nobody signs deliberately. A part you do not build is a part you cannot repair. When it fails, the remedy stops being an engineering decision. It becomes a request, made to a factory with its own racing team and its own calendar, and answered in an order somebody else sets.
Albert Park applied the first heat on the eighth of March. Ten more rounds followed before the shutdown, and the instruments came back holding ten readings rather than eleven, because at one of them there was no McLaren on the circuit to measure. What they did record is not, in the end, a story about aerodynamics, though the aerodynamics are in it and they are good.
They drew the half that everybody else buys, and bought the half that nobody can draw. Both halves broke. Only one of them was theirs to mend.
The opening measurement of a title defence is normally taken from lap times. McLaren's cannot be, because across the first two rounds three of their four entries never reached a racing lap.
Two of those three were the power unit. The other was not, and the difference is worth holding on to. Piastri qualified fifth at Melbourne and lost the car at Turn 4 while driving round to his slot, the formation lap still ahead of him. Stella's settled account names three contributors and not one of them is a broken part. Cold rubber, the kerb, and a torque delivery the 2026 cars had only just begun asking their drivers to live with. Piastri took his share without decoration. "A big element of that was me."
Shanghai was different. Neither car started, from fifth and sixth, and both were stopped by the electrical side of the power unit. Norris's never turned a wheel outside the garage. Piastri's reached its slot and was wheeled back down the lane. Mercedes HPP's investigation afterwards separated the two rather than joining them, returning two faults of a different nature rather than one repeated one. The component in Norris's car could not be saved and was replaced. Piastri's was an auxiliary part, repaired individually with the FIA's permission. McLaren called the pairing an extremely unfortunate coincidence, and Stella describes the working relationship with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains as excellent. No source and no FIA document concludes a shared design fault, and this piece does not assert one. What the fortnight leaves behind is narrower. Twice, a customer's 2026 electrical hardware behaved in a way Woking had not planned for. Eight points, and nothing yet worth measuring.
Then the car ran, and the reading changed completely. Suzuka returned a race-pace deficit of 0.248 per cent against the quickest machine at the circuit and put a McLaren on the podium. Miami returned 0.168 per cent and put both of them there. On the hard compound at Miami the second-stint medians read McLaren 1:32.510 against Mercedes 1:32.761, a quarter of a second a lap held for thirty laps on the tyre that decided the race. The alloy was not theoretical. It was on the road and it was reading well.
Montréal took it apart, and the round is easy to file wrongly. Both cars started the race on intermediates from third and fourth while every rival in the top eight took slicks, and the track dried before the second lap was out. That is a strategy story and it accounts for much of the 1.823 per cent the round returned. It is not the part that belongs here.
The part that belongs here is what stopped Norris. He had run across the grass on lap 8 and picked up debris in a cooling duct, taken an unscheduled stop on lap 15, rebuilt to eighth by lap 36, and then the transmission gave out. Not the power unit. The gearbox, and Stella's assessment was that the failure was coming regardless of the debris. So by round five the season had broken the part McLaren buy and the part McLaren insist on drawing, in that order, and only one of those had been on anybody's list of exposures.

Monaco, one round later, returned the worst pace figure of their year at 2.065 per cent and a second consecutive retirement for Norris, this one a terminal power-unit failure the team never publicly named, on a weekend he had already lost most of Friday practice to a power-unit problem. Six rounds in, the shape of the opening was legible, and it was not a shape about aerodynamics.
Two afternoons in the first five said the car was the second-quickest in the world. The other three said it did not matter what the car was.
Nobody on the grid brought more than McLaren. Thirty-four components across nine declared packages and seven programmes, with two of those programmes continued into a second race rather than opened and abandoned. Ferrari brought 31 components inside seven programmes. Red Bull brought 33 inside six. The championship-leading Mercedes brought 21 and did not run a continuing line at all. Whatever else the MCL40's season was, it was not under-resourced.
Read that sheet in the order the season delivered it and a shape appears. Two rounds of nothing, because there was nothing running to bolt parts to. Then Miami, the largest package of their year, and both cars on the podium behind it. Then a middle in which the car went backwards, worst at Montréal and worse again at Monte Carlo. Then one small part at Barcelona. Then Silverstone, and a floor. Then the Hungaroring, and the front of the field. Three of the seven programmes moved the car forward, two were cut for one weekend and never seen again, one left no trace, and one went the wrong way. The ratio is unremarkable for a team that brought this many parts. Which programme sits on the wrong side of it is not.
Negative is slower. Measured against the field, across rounds 4 and 5.
Fourteen components on one idea, more than any team spent on any single thread all season, and the car came out of it further from the front than it went in. Half a second a lap, surrendered across two rounds, at venues whose character should have paid this class of part back with interest.
The trap in that figure is Miami itself. Miami was a strong weekend, the second-best pace of their year with both cars on the rostrum, and it is the weekend the thread opened. The temptation is to let the result vouch for the programme. It cannot. Whatever the cooling parts were built to solve, the season's largest concentration of engineering did not move the MCL40 forward, and the biggest thing McLaren spent is the one entry on the sheet pointing backwards.

Field-relative race-pace delta across each programme's measurement window, in seconds per lap. Positive means the car gained on the field. Component counts in the labels. The only programme with a negative reading is also the one carrying the most parts. Circuit-bound and inconclusive programmes are shown muted: their deltas are not bankable across venues.
What worked cost them almost nothing by comparison. Barcelona's revised front-wing endplate, one part, was worth 0.393 seconds a lap against the field. The Mercedes specification change at Spa was fitted for reliability rather than speed and returned 0.242 anyway. And the floor and diffuser line, opened at Silverstone and continued at the Hungaroring, returned 0.551, the largest figure on McLaren's sheet and the last of them to arrive.
At the Hungaroring nothing on the grid was faster than the MCL40. Not nearly the fastest. The fastest, by a quarter of a second to the next machine, and the only time all season that sentence could be written.
The circuit supplies its own caution. The Hungaroring runs the highest downforce level of the year, it rewards floors and boards and front-corner furniture, which is exactly what had just gone on the car, and it asks a power unit almost nothing, which removes the axis McLaren had been losing on since March. The quickest car in the field was quickest at the one venue built to make it so. Whether the same parts carry it somewhere less generous is a question Zandvoort will put, and nothing before Zandvoort can answer.
A single endplate at Barcelona returned more than the fourteen parts that came before it. Spending is not developing.
A furnace with one sample in it measures nothing. Across the ten rounds McLaren actually raced, the mean deficit to the quickest car at each circuit reads as follows.
Fourth. Not third, and not by a comfortable interval from the car behind. Twenty-two thousandths of a percentage point separate McLaren from Red Bull across the first half of the season, close enough that the ordering is arguable and far enough from the top two that the tier is not. The reigning constructors' champions have the fourth-quickest car of 2026 on the season's own evidence, and the phrase that follows this team around, the best race pace on the grid, was true at Miami and true at the Hungaroring. Between those two afternoons lie nine rounds where it was not.
What McLaren do own outright is range.

McLaren's best round is quicker than anything Ferrari recorded; their worst is nearly four times Ferrari's worst. Round 2 is absent for McLaren because neither car started.
Ferrari's readings across eleven rounds occupy a band a little over half a percentage point wide, and they occupy it whatever the circuit is asking. McLaren's occupy a corridor four times as tall. Eleven weeks separate the two ends of it, and those two ends are the whole season in a pair of numbers. Monte Carlo returned 2.065 per cent, the widest deficit any of the front four recorded all year. The Hungaroring returned zero, the outright fastest car in the field. Same chassis, same engine architecture, same aerodynamic philosophy, and a gap between best and worst that no rival came close to producing.
Range of that magnitude is not a flaw in itself. A car with a narrow operating window can win championships at the circuits inside it. What range costs is the ability to plan, because a season is scored in aggregate, and an aggregate assembled from extremes arrives at the same place as one assembled from mediocrity. McLaren go into the shutdown on 222 points and third in the constructors' championship, 85 behind a Ferrari that was the outright quickest car at two rounds all year and never once as slow as McLaren's ordinary bad afternoon.
Ferrari were never the quickest car for long and never the slowest at all. McLaren were both, eleven weeks apart, and finished behind them.
The MCL40's fracture is not a corner type and not a circuit class. It is a line on a drawing, decided in winter, in a year whose regulations moved the sport's advantage to the exact side of it McLaren cannot reach.
The 2026 power unit divides its output close to evenly between combustion and electrical deployment, which moves the competitive question away from how much energy a car can make and towards how much it can recover and how well it can spend it. A gearbox sits inside that answer. Ratio selection governs how long an engine dwells in the part of its range where recovery is cheap, which makes the transmission a component with more riding on it this season than in any season that came before. McLaren chose to keep drawing their own in the year that choice began to matter most.
The bill did not arrive as lap time. It arrived as allocation.
The 2026 entitlement runs to three power-electronics units for each driver across the season. That is the base allowance with one added, a concession written to give the field room while unfamiliar hardware settles. Norris reached the summer break having consumed four.

Unit 3 was installed at Suzuka and has run since Miami.
Two of three destroyed before the season reached its midpoint. The fourth was not forced on them mid-weekend, and the fact that it was elected makes it stronger evidence rather than weaker. McLaren picked Spa on purpose, a track where places can still be recovered on the road, in preference to the two rounds queued immediately behind it at the Hungaroring and Zandvoort, where they cannot. What they bought with the penalty was work the manufacturer alone was in a position to perform. Power electronics are not a component a customer may open. The only decision left in the team's hands was which weekend to spend, and they spent the cheapest one available.
And they asked last. The reliability specification introduced at the Red Bull Ring in round eight reached Alpine and Williams at Silverstone in round nine. It reached McLaren at Spa in round ten, because their remaining components still carried usable mileage after the early-season attrition had reshuffled everyone's ledger. Three customers, one queue, and the team with the most to gain from the fix stood at the back of it.
The comparison that gives this its full weight is not with a rival chassis. It is with the engine supplier. Mercedes have an electrical weakness of their own in 2026. Their round-eight change was a battery reliability item, and Russell lost the Belgian Grand Prix to a deployment problem inside ninety seconds of racing. The difference is not in the fault. It is in what a fault costs. The works team diagnoses its own weakness, repairs it in its own building, and schedules the work around its own championship. The customer surrenders ten grid places and joins a queue that the works team's calendar helps to set.
Norris came back from thirteenth to seventh that afternoon, which reads as a good drive and was in fact a thin one. He was seventh on race pace too, at a median of 1:50.752, which is the rare case of a recovery drive arriving exactly where the stopwatch had already placed it. The penalty did more than move him down the grid. It committed the pit wall to a plan built around a neutralisation that never arrived, thirty laps on the opening set and a stop that ran 28.3 seconds when it finally came. Ten places is not a number of positions. It is an afternoon rebuilt around them.
And the part McLaren build failed too. Norris's Montréal retirement was the gearbox. Piastri's Hungaroring retirement, on lap 55, running second, was the gearbox again. Two transmission failures in eleven rounds, one per car, on the single component the team declined to buy. Independence did not purchase reliability. It purchased control, and control is worth what it is worth only if the thing you control holds.
Every decision that mattered here belonged to somebody else's calendar. That is what the line on the drawing actually cost.
What went into the furnace was a division of labour. Draw everything that can be drawn, buy the rest, and out-develop the difference.
The drawn half held. Thirty-four components, more than any rival declared. Two aerodynamic programmes delivered, one of them 0.551 seconds a lap against the field. A front-wing endplate that returned 0.393 from a single part. A car that was quicker than everything else in the world on the afternoon its floor programme met a circuit built for floors. On the evidence of eleven rounds, McLaren can still develop aerodynamics as well as anyone on this grid.
The bought half did not. Three non-starts in the opening fortnight, two of them electrical and one of them a crash on the way to a grid the driver never reached. Two power-electronics units destroyed by mid-season out of an allowance of three. A ten-place penalty taken by choice because choosing was the only agency available. Last place in a queue of three customers waiting on a fix from a supplier with a championship of its own to run.
And the transmission they refused to buy broke twice, once per car, on the two afternoons a McLaren was running for something.
The ledger reads 222 points, third in the constructors' championship, one win, one pole, and a season whose defining measurement is not a mean but a spread. Fourth-fastest on average, first-fastest once, and 2.065 percentage points adrift on the afternoon Monte Carlo asked its question.
There is one more thing coming, and McLaren neither chose it nor can refuse it.
The engine upgrade the FIA granted Mercedes in June belongs to the manufacturer rather than to the works team, and Mercedes have not spent it. Whenever they do, the same unit goes into the back of every car running their power unit, and one of those cars is orange.
So the system McLaren have no means of improving is the system they are about to be handed, and it goes into their car in the same week it goes into the works cars that spent the first half of the season beating them with it. A gift and a measurement arrive together. Whether a customer can make a new engine work as quickly as the people who drew it is the question the second half will put, and it is the question this entire season has been asking in other accents.
What the crucible cannot yet say is whether the line they drew down the middle of the car was drawn in the wrong place, or simply drawn in the wrong year. Twelve rounds remain to settle it.
A furnace makes no distinction between the parts a team drew and the parts it was sent. It heats them together, and it reports on both.
11 races. The heat was applied. Not what was promised in wind tunnels. Not what was projected in simulations. What the engineering actually produced when the crucible demanded proof. The data measured what remained. It always does.
